A range of training opportunities is available for public library staff to ensure they are equipped with the knowledge and skills to use eresources provided through NSW.net effectively for the benefit of their communities.

The training will ensure public library staff can get the most out of the eresources.

Introduction to statewide databases workshop

This workshop provides an overview of the statewide databases provided to all NSW public library services through NSW.net. The workshop highlights the content of the databases and how they meet community information needs as well as how to effectively promote the databases to library users. This workshop is delivered by State Library PLS staff.

The workshop takes 2 hours. At the end of the workshop library staff will be able to:

  • understand the role of databases in meeting community information needs
  • have an awareness of the statewide databases scheme
  • identify potential users of the databases in your community
  • understand how to use the databases
  • know how to promote the databases to your community.

Online courses on the PL Portal

The PL Portal is an online training platform developed and maintained by the State Library for NSW public library staff. The training courses on the PL Portal enable NSW public library staff to develop an understanding of the collections and services of the State Library. The courses will suit all levels of staff including new public library staff and those seeking to refresh their knowledge.

  • indyreads - what it is, why you would use it and how you can promote it to your community (approx 1 hour).
  • Introduction to statewide databases - learn about the Gale statewide databases provided free to every NSW public library service (approx 15 mins)
  • NSW.net consortia opt-in offers scheme - find out how your library can access discounts for digital content through the NSW.net consortia opt-in offers scheme for NSW public libraries (approx 15 mins)

Gale training

Gale also provides a variety of training about the statewide databases for public libraries, including in person and online. The training includes thematic webinars, product training designed to introduce the main features of each database, and technical support.

Many of the NSW.net eresources vendors provide online training material for use by library staff and library patrons.  To obtain training material contact the vendor directly. Vendor sales representatives are listed on the consortia opt-in product pages.  

indyreads professional development collection

A substantial collection of library and information management ebooks are available on indyreads. Topics range from systems and records management to technology, leadership, staff management, cataloguing and service delivery.
